Boosting Local Economy & Tourism through Regional Events
Mayor Dustin Yates announced his intention to pursue expanded indoor, multi-use sports and community space in St. George, designed to enhance quality of life for families across East Baton Rouge Parish. The vision includes flexible convention and event space within a multi-use sports environment, creating new opportunities for community gatherings, tournaments, and civic events that benefit the entire parish.
“My intention is to see St. George lead in creating more places for families to come together and for kids to learn, grow, and play—strengthening quality of life across the entire parish,” said Mayor Yates. “When we do things well in St. George, all of East Baton Rouge Parish benefits.”
This intention also recognizes the economic and tourism potential of a modern, multi-use venue—positioning St. George to attract regional events and visitors, support local businesses, and contribute to a stronger parish-wide economy.
As this vision takes shape, community engagement will be an important next step. Residents, youth-sports organizations, and parish recreation partners will be invited to share input on needs, priorities, and opportunities. Details on how the public can participate will be announced in the coming weeks.
At the same time, Mayor Yates also intends to center nonprofit, community-based youth sports in St. George—with programs designed to serve surrounding communities and the entire parish—by convening parish recreation partners including BREC, identifying gaps in access, and initiating affordable, community-led leagues that prioritize family fun.
These intentions reflect a broader commitment to investing in families, strengthening community ties, and building a healthier, more prosperous future for the parish through St. George leadership.
